Ola Leaf Manuscript Preservation and Research

Preserving Ancient Wisdom: Our Work with Ola Leaf Manuscripts

At the Foundation for Ceylon Heritage and Archaeology (FCHA), we are committed to safeguarding Sri Lanka’s ancient knowledge through the preservation and study of Ola leaf manuscripts — centuries-old records etched on dried palm leaves.

Digitization of Ola Leaf Manuscripts

We use advanced imaging and archival technologies to digitize fragile Ola leaf manuscripts, ensuring these priceless documents are preserved for future generations and made accessible to scholars and the public alike.

Restoration of Damaged Manuscripts

Our restoration experts meticulously clean, repair, and stabilize damaged Ola leaves, applying traditional and scientific methods to prolong their lifespan and readability without compromising historical authenticity.

Research into Manuscript Content

We conduct interdisciplinary research on the vast knowledge captured in these texts. Topics span Buddhist teachings, historical chronicles, indigenous sciences, technological practices, culinary traditions, and Ayurvedic medicine — offering invaluable insights into the intellectual and cultural fabric of ancient Sri Lanka.

Study of the Manuscript Tradition

Beyond content, we explore the art and tradition of Ola leaf manuscript production, including tools, scripts, materials, and methods. This helps us understand not only what was written, but how and why it was recorded in this unique and enduring format.

Through this work, we strive to preserve and revive the rich heritage encoded in Ola leaves — connecting the past with the present and opening new paths for cultural and academic discovery.
